Plaintiff continues unbeaten at Rosehill

After her sparkling debut at Rosehill, Plaintiff returned back to the same track at Saturday metropolitan level (though on a Sunday due to the extreme temperatures on Saturday). In the event, she again showed great race smarts, settling behind the leaders and bounding into the lead in the straight, then knuckling down well to see of the more experienced Nitro in the final 50m.

Plaintiff is out of Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara winner Prompt Response, and was secured on behalf of her owners John and Deb Camilleri from the Widden Stud draft at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Congratulations to owners John and Deb Camilleri, and many thanks to trainer Peter Snowden and to jockey Jordan Childs.

Fireball powers home at Rosehill

Snitzel colt Fireball had impressed at the trials leading into his debut this weekend at Rosehill, and he lived up to his billing with an impressive debut victory.

Settled behind the leaders under jockey Tommy Berry, Fireball pulled into the clear on the home turn and, after being headed, kept on powerfully in the straight to win going away in great style.

Fireball was purchased for our Colt Partnership with TFI at the 2025 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $460,000 from the Yarraman Park Stud draft. He is by Champion sire Snitzel and comes from the family of high-class 2YOs such as Countess Christie and I Have No Fear.

Many thanks to trainer Chris Waller for his careful handling, and congratulations to owners Belinda Bateman, Tom & Leslie Kennedy, Marc & Lindy de Stoop, Gary Diamond, Fergus Pat Doyle, Rob Love, Tam Dieu & Jacqui Sushames, Danny & Pauline Saab and The Northerly.

Plaintiff gets the right verdict at Rosehill on debut

Regally-bred Zoustar filly Plaintiff got her racing career off to a perfect start today at Rosehill, powering away from a smart field of fillies to break her maiden at the first time of asking under jockey Tommy Berry.

She has impressed at the trials, and here on race day it was no different, settling in a beautiful position on a speed-favouring track and, despite still not fully knowing how to let down properly, she was too good, running her final 600m in a very smart 33.41 seconds.

Plaintiff is out of Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara winner Prompt Response, and was secured on behalf of her owners John and Deb Camilleri from the Widden Stud draft at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Congratulations to John and Deb, and many thanks to trainer Peter Snowden and to jockey Tommy Berry.

JHB Broodmare Partnership in action stateside at Fasig Tipton

Given the great results that we have had out of our American broodmare purchases, we were again in action this year, securing a very fast and early 2YO from the Fasig Tipton November Sale.

Lot 224, Youalmosthadme, was secured for US$300,000 from the Elite Race Sales draft, where she was sold on behalf of her owners Resolute Racing.

She was winner of three stakes races as a 2YO. She broke her maiden at Keeneland in April (equivalent to September in the Australian season) over 900m by over eight lengths in great style. She then took on the colts in the Listed Kentucky Juvenile Stakes over 1000m at Churchill Downs, the first 2YO stakes race of the season, where she again dominated by over eight lengths.

She returned to sprinting in the Listed Myrtlewood Stakes over 1200m at Keeneland and was impressive again, winning by seven lengths before rounding out her 2YO season with another Listed win over 1300m at Churchill Downs. She trained on to win another Listed race as a 3YO over 1300m, in addition to placings at Group 2 and Group 3 level.

Incognito shines on debut in the Group 3 Breeders' Plate

Epsom Day holds the traditional curtain-raiser for the new crop of two-year-olds, with both the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate and the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes featuring on an outstanding card of racing at Royal Randwick. The Breeders’ Plate has been a happy hunting ground for the JHB Colt Partnership, with three previous winners over the past decade, notably with subsequent Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, along with Khan and Espionage.

It was therefore particularly satisfying to see this year’s crop of colts, in our first season partnering with Tony Fung Investments, continue that success with Incognito running out an impressive winner to become the fourth colt to salute in the green and gold silks.

After stumbling out of the gates, Incognito was positioned towards the rear, but jockey Tommy Berry remained composed. The colt, from the first crop of Stay Inside, showed an electric turn of foot to surge into contention in the straight and held off a strong challenge from I’m Ya Huckleberry to score stylishly.

Incognito was purchased from the Eureka Stud draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for the partnership. Our thanks go to trainer Michael Freedman, who has done an outstanding job with this talented colt, and to Tommy Berry, who gave him a superb steer.

Congratulations to our ownership group: Tony Fung Investments, Belinda Bateman, Sean and Felicity Dyson, Tom and Leslie Kennedy, Marc and Lindy de Stoop, Gary Diamond, Fergus-Pat Doyle, Rob Love, Tam Dieu and Jacqui Sushames, Danny and Pauline Saab, and The Northerly.

Angel Capital set to take flight in The Everest in the James Harron Bloodstock slot

James Harron Bloodstock is excited to announce a partnership with global thoroughbred powerhouse Yulong for The Everest 2025, with rising star Angel Capital today confirmed as the runner in the James Harron Bloodstock slot.

“Angel Capital looks to have gone to another level this preparation,” said James Harron. “We’re honoured to partner with Yulong and this hugely exciting horse - he very much looks as though he will be ideally suited to what is shaping up to be a very high-pressure Everest this year."

On behalf of Yulong, Chief Executive Officer Sam Fairgray added: “We’re delighted to partner with James and his owners to tackle The Everest with Angel Capital. It’s a hugely exciting opportunity for this colt and one Chris Waller has been very keen to pursue. Angel Capital is a colt on an upward trajectory this season, Mr Zhang and the Yulong team are thrilled he has the chance to spread his wings in the world’s richest turf race.”

Good morning for JHB Partnerships at the First Official 2YO Trials

The first official 2YO trials are always a fantastic morning to get the first look at the fresh crop of 2YO, with always plenty to learn and a rich history of future stars, including the likes of Capitalist and King’s Legacy for the JHB Colt Partnership.

Knightsbridge (Farnan x Festivity)

Farnan colt Knightsbridge was an impressive winner for the JHB Colt Partnership in Heat 5, knuckling down well to overhaul Our Emperor in the final stride. He also ran the fastest final 600m of the whole morning, which bodes well for his future.

Also in action for the JHB Colt Partnership was Stay Inside colt Incognito in heat 9, and he also showed plenty of talent. He strode up in fine style in the straight, before just getting a little lost coming off the bridle for the first time. He will take great benefit from this, and is one to watch out for.

For our Filly Partnership, Capitalist filly Mayflower was another to catch the eye in heat 4. She travelled powerfully to lead early in the straight, before her fitness gave out in the final stages. She’s another who should take a good step forward from this first experience.

Two 2yo Winners by Capitalist

Caesar pictured as a yearling. Image courtesy of Magic Millions

Beautifully bred 2yo colt Caesar kicked off his career in promising fashion at Gosford yesterday beating the older horses over 1100m.

Caesar came into the race off the back of two good trial wins at Randwick and Rosehill. He settled just off the speed under jockey Jason Collett and showed a good turn of foot to reel in the runaway leader to win going away with his ears pricked. He is still learning his craft but looks to have plenty of natural ability and an exciting future ahead.

Caesar is by Capitalist out of Not A Single Doubt mare Fimatino making him a half brother to three time stakes winning 2yo Shaquero. He was bred by Bob and Sue Hannon who remain in the ownership and was an $800,000 JHB Colt Partnership purchase from the draft of Attunga Stud at the 2024 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Caesar was the second JHB 2yo winner by Capitalist in the space of a week with the speedy Gambler also winning at Hawkesbury last week. Settling in midfield he was taken to the outside by jockey Tommy Berry to finish the race off strongly to make it a win and a second placing from two starts this preparation.

Gambler is out of the stakes placed Stratum mare Flamboyant Lass and is a half brother to stakes placed 2yo Nitrous. He was a $360,000 JHB Colt Partnership purchase from Magic Millions from the draft of Newgate Stud.

Many thanks to the team at Snowden Racing who prepared both horses beautifully and congratulations to their owners.

JHB in action at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale

We were in action at the recent Magic Millions Broodmare Sale, securing a number of quality offerings to support our clients’ racing and breeding portfolios.

Our first purchase, in the race filly section, was the Group 1 winner Lady Laguna, who was bought from the Newgate Stud draft for $2,500,000. She’s a beautiful mare, with great strength, quality and presence - every inch the type to turn into a high-quality broodmare when the time comes. She is a great credit to her trainers Annabel & Rob Archibald and to her ownership group under Terry Henderson’s OTI Racing umbrella.

Lot 563 - Lady Laguna - $2,500,000

We purchased a pair of in-foal mares for the JHB Broodmare Partnership, which focuses on securing commercial results for our owners.

Lot 735 - Mhaille (in foal to Zoustar) - $580,000

Mhaille is a beautiful mare - and by a Champion sire in I Am Invincible, who is starting to make a strong impact as a broodmare sire through the likes of Group 1 winners Asfoora and Kimochi.

She is also a half-sister to the top-class sprinter Artorius, who went very close to winning at Royal Ascot, and also in the immediate family are Group 1 winning sprinters Delectation and Southport Tycoon.

She was offered in foal to Zoustar and due to foal in early-September. With Zoustar yearlings averaging $400,000 at Magic Millions and $645,000 at Easter this year, and selling up to $1,700,000, there was a strong commercial reasoning behind her purchase.

Lot 818 - She’s Glamourous (in foal to Stay Inside) - $200,000

She’s Glamourous is another very good-looking mare. She’s got great strength, quality and lovely width. She’s a full-sister to dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour, whose daughter Just Glamourous sold for $450,000 here straight off the track.

She’s Glamourous has already produced some promising gallopers, with her Frosted 2YO filly Elsa of Arendelle shaping to be a black type filly in the making. The cover to Stay Inside is very attractive - with very positive feedback so far on the yearlings by this stallions, this mare provided a great mix of potential uplifts in her own family, while also being in foal to a stallion who could really hit the ground running with his first 2YOs later this year.

Sucess for JHB Broodmare purchases at Magic Millions National Weanling Sale

There were some great results today at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for JHB broodmare purchases.

Early in the day the Anamoe filly out of Listed Debutant Stakes winner Kiki Express set the pace, selling for $360,000 to Ciaron Maher Bloodstock. She is the first foal of her dam (pictured above), who was purchased on behalf of G1G Racing and Breeding for $350,000 at this sale last year from the Milburn Creek draft.

Later in the day there was another good return for an in-foal mare purchase when the Stay Inside colt out of Emotional Moment colt sold for $225,000 to Middlebrook Valley Lodge and Damian Fitton Bloodstock. This mare (pictured above) was also purchased in-foal here at last year’s sale, for $130,000 from the Willow Park Stud draft.

We will be hunting hard again during this year’s sale, which commences from 12pm on Tuesday 27th May.

Sunshine in Paris gains deserved Group 1 double

After performing with huge credit at the highest level in Australia all Autumn, Sunshine in Paris gained just reward for her consistence and excellence with a brave win in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 this weekend.

Despite hating the heavy track, she showed her trademark grit and determination to overhaul a resurgent Rothefire in the final strides, under yet another inspired steer from Champion jockey James McDonald.

Sunshine in Paris was a JHB Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale purchase from the Newgate Farm draft on behalf of John and Deb Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds. A huge congratulations to John and Deb, who were both trackside to enjoy this momentous day. Well done also to trainers Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald, who continue to produce this mare in top order every time that she steps out.

JHB in action at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale

The final stop of the premier yearling sales circuit is taking place at Inglis Riverside for the Easter Yearling Sale, and we have been in action securing some choice yearlings.

Lot 16 - Snitzel x La Mexicana colt - $1,700,000

This is a high-quality colt, with a lovely action and strength. He has great presence and looks all racehorse. He is by Champion sire Snitzel, who is showing no signs of slowing down, adding his third Golden Slipper winner this season with Marhoona.

This colt is out of La Mexicana who was a very smart performer, winner of six of her 16 starts, including at Group 3 level. He was secured for our Colt Partnership alongside TFI and Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Racing.

Lot 141 - Stay Inside x Schwesterherz colt - $650,000

This is a very precocious-looking colt. He’s got a powerful action and a great attitude to his work. His dam was a very smart performer in Germany, where she was rated 108 by Timeform and her best race distance was 1400m/1600m, which is in line with the other good horses from the family.

Her sire, Areion was a very good 1200m horse in Germany, and he is running at 9.7% stakes winners to runners as a broodmare sire. He was secured for our Colt Partnership alongside TFI.

Lot 198 - Zoustar x Summer Sham colt - $1,400,000

This is a quality colt, with lovely depth of girth and strength. He’s got powerful movement, and super presence. He is full-brother to Schwarz, who recently won the Group 1 William Reid Stakes to secure his place at stud.

Further, his dam was a very smart sprinter/miler and comes from one of Australia’s very best families, that of multiple Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice. He was secured for our Colt Partnership alongside TFI.

Lot 271 - Snitzel x Advance Party colt - $460,000

This is a strong, forward-looking colt by Champion Sire Snitzel, who continues to prove the premier source of quality 2YOs in Australia.

He is out of a 2YO winning mare by Charge Forward, which makes this colt bred on the same cross as Golden Slipper winner Estijaab and very smart sprinter Remarque. He was purchased for our Colt Partnership alongside TFI.

Lot 154 - Snitzel x Sexy Eyes filly - $700,000

Our lone filly purchase of the sale was Lot 154, the Snitzel filly out of Sexy Eyes, purchased for $700,000 from Milburn Creek.

She’s a beautiful, elegant filly with great athleticism, and out of the very smart Group 3 winner Sexy Eyes. The reverse of this Snitzel x Written Tycoon cross has been a very impressive one, with Private Life, Velocious and Captured by Love all Group 1 winners by Written Tycoon out of Snitzel mares from just 38 runners.

Memo brilliant in Group 3 Magic Night Stakes

There was no more deserving big race winner this weekend than Memo, who avenged some luckless defeats with a thrilling late run to take out the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill.

Again drawing a wide barrier as has been her luck for the majority of her short career to date, she was forced towards the rear, but produced an outstanding turn of foot to mow down her rivals in the straight and record an impressive win.

Memo’s victory was a particularly sweet one for her breeder, Rob Love, who retained a significant stake in this exciting young filly when she was sold to Snowden Racing for $350,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Rob raced her dam, Notation, who was a JHB weanling purchase, while he has also been a founding member of the JHB Colt Partnership, which produced Memo’s sire, Golden Slipper winner Capitalist.

Notation had a Stay Inside yearling colt, who recently sold for $380,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale to Yulong, and is back in foal to Capitalist to produce a full sibling to Memo.

Many thanks to the team at Snowden Racing, to jockey Kerrin McEvoy, and congratulations to the owners of Memo, who have a very valuable and exciting filly on their hands.

Conscience scintillating on debut at Sandown

Snitzel filly Conscience got her career off to a sparkling start today at Sandown in the 1000m 2YO Maiden. Settled towards the rear by jockey Blake Shinn, she unleashed a powerful sprint in the straight to win, running her final 600m in an electric 32.64 seconds on a soft 6 track.

She was purchased for John and Deb Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Baramul Stud draft alongside TFI and her trainer, Peter Moody.

She is a half-sister to JHB Colt Partnership purchase and dual Group 3 winning-2YO, Espionage, with her second dam being Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Military Rose.

There looks to be many exciting days ahead with this filly for her owners!

Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale - Colt Partnership

The busy yearling sales series shifted to Melbourne this week, for the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, and we were once again in action for the JHB Colt Partnership in conjunction with Tony Fung Investments.

Lot 310 - Snitzel x Maybe I colt - $260,000

We purchased Lot 310, the Snitzel colt out of Maybe I for $260,000 from the Segenhoe Stud draft.

Snitzel continues to do the job with his colts, recently with last year’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Switzerland, as well as already producing several sons who are at stud. This colt is also a half-brother to the very smart miler Ringerdingding and comes from the family of Champion mare Flitter.

Inglis Classic Yearling Sale - Colt Partnership

The busy start to the year with yearling sales continues this week with the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, and we were in action for the James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership, again buying in conjunction with Tony Fung Investments.

Lot 93 - Farnan x Can’t Get Enough - $160,000

This is a quality colt, with lovely strength and substance. He’s got nice width, and walks out with a good, fluent action. He is by Golden Slipper winner Farnan, who has produced Group 3 Golden Gift winner North England from his first crop this season, who also came out of this sale.

This is a good, fast family. His dam was a dual winner at 1100m, and is a half-sister to the very smart sprinter Big Parade. Further back, this is the family of top-class 2YO Zizou, as well as stallions such as Not a Single Doubt, King’s Legacy and Snippets.

Lot 634 - Zoustar x She’s Our Choice - $290,000

This is a strong colt, with lovely quality and great width. He strides out well, and looks like a more precocious type of Zoustar.

This colt is out of a half-sister to the top-class sprinter and outstanding stallion Extreme Choice, which would give him a very desirable profile if he were to be successful on the racetrack.

New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale - Colt Partnership

After picking up a beautiful filly on Day 1 for our Filly Partnership, we were back in action early on Day 3 of the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, purchasing an outstanding son of multiple Group 1 winner and Champion St Mark’s Basilica from Hallmark Stud for NZ$220,000.

Lot 499 - St Mark’s Basilica x Bronte Lass colt - NZ$220,000

This colt is a half-brother to a smart filly Bronte Beach, who was Group 3 placed as a 2YO, and from the family of good 2YOs such as Earnshaw, Zelanda and Pearl Grey. Further back this is the family of the outstanding filly Zarkava, who was an unbeaten Prix de L’arc de Triomphe winner.

New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale - Filly Partnership

We are off the mark at the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale for our Filly Partnership along with Michael Freedman and Tony Fung Investments.

Lot 168 - Too Darn Hot x On The Ball - NZ$675,000

This a quality filly by Too Darn Hot. She’s got a lovely shape and action, and a lot of class and scope about her. Too Darn Hot had started very strongly in the Southern Hemisphere, with dual Group 1 winner Broadsiding as well as very smart fillies Arabian Summer and Too Darn Lizzie.

This filly is a half-sister to Archaic Smile, who is the only stakes winner in the Southern Hemisphere by Saxon Warrior. She won a listed race as a a 2YO and was also Group 1 placed as a 2YO. Further back this filly comes from the family of top class performers Onemorenmore and Casino Prince.

Another Saturday city winner for King's Legacy

Exciting young sire and James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership graduate King’s Legacy posted his second winner at Randwick on Saturday with a debut victory for talented filly Open Secret (2f King's Legacy x Vain Elaine, by High Chaparral), who scored a short half head win in a thriller over $1.75 million Snitzel colt United States.

Trained by John Thompson and ridden by Zac Lloyd, Open Secret was super professional working forward from an inside gate to lead and hold the fence which proved a winning move. She travelled well and gave a great kick to hold off her rivals.

Open Secret had just one trial leading into her debut which as John Thomspon explained was by design.

“From day one she has shown she is a quality horse and when I looked at her at the sales I swear to God I thought I was looking at a colt,” Thompson said.

“She trialled well and typically we would trial them again, but with the Inglis race in two weeks time we decided to come here as her second trial and hopefully get some prizemoney and we got more than a bit.

“Class takes you a long way, but no way did I think she would lead today, I thought they would be too quick for her, but she has natural talent and two year-olds just go and do it.”

A $150,000 Inglis Classic purchase from Middlebrook Valley Lodge, Open Secret is the third winner from four foals to race from Vain Elaine, a metro winning High Chaparral mare from the family of Group I winners Captain Moonlight and Richfield Lady.

Open Secret is the second winner for King’s Legacy, who also sired the first starter La Reine, bred by JHB client Rob Love to finish second on debut at Morphettville in Adelaide.

Fashion Faux Pas sells for $1.15 million for JHB Broodmare Partnership

Following hot on the heels of the sale of her Snitzel yearling colt for $1,700,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, this week we offered Fashion Faux Pas in the latest Inglis Digital online auction, where she was sold for $1,150,000 to Justin Carey of Coolmore Australia.

Our Broodmare Partnership was set up to operate at the quality end of the market, and provide commercial returns for our partners, so this was an excellent result. Fashion Faux Pas was bought for US$310,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, and after today’s result the total sales of her and progeny now total just under A$3,000,000, with a beautiful Extreme Choice filly to offer at the 2026 yearling sales. We have been targeting American mares in particular to provide a great outcross for Australia, and will continue to target this market strongly.

Congratulations to Coolmore, who have bought an outstanding broodmare who has it all ahead of her, and fingers crossed that she can become a blue hen for their operation. They are achieving great success, and their hard work and dedication make it well-deserved.

Congratulations to our owners, Belinda Bateman, Phil & Glenda Mehrten, Rob Love and the Doyle Family on this fantastic result, and many thanks to the Newgate team for their hard work with Fashion Faux Pas and her progeny.
